Over 150 years ago, and before the railroad made it obsolete, the 
Middlesex Canal ran along the side of the pond where the houses can be 
seen in the first photo. There were two locks which are now only two 
gentle rises in the current road.

The pond level was lower so there was a small island where the three 
willow trees are shown in the 2nd and 3rd photos. Weekend day trippers 
from Boston eight miles away, would come by canal to the island to use a 
bowling alley there and to picnic.
