But it doesn't bother me as the only time I keep it collapsed is when it's in the case. I think the reason it's designed that way is so you can keep the aperture numerals on top by rotating the barrel with and without the close up attachment. In that case it's actually a clever design and different then the 50mm DR Summicron which does not collapse.
