Jim,

The jpg file is about 4 times the size of the gif which is why the  
scanning times is longer.

Besides saturation the jpg has much better color variations. Look at  
the smoothness of the ladies back and the different shades of color  
in the jpg. Also some of the darker areas in the gif look pixelated.
