When you import the photos, you can automatically assign keywords as 
the photos are imported..  You can use the Find feature in the 
Library to search by keywords, or metadata, or EXIF, or date.*  All 
of that is automatically included with the import.  With digital 
photos, you can find all of the photos made with an M8 or all of the 
photos made at 1600 ISO or all of the photos made on August 16th, 
2008.  Of course if you are scanning photos and importing those, not 
all of that information will be there.  That's when you want to be 
sure to include some identification as the photos are 
imported.  That's where I can put country, subject or any other 
keywords I might need.  It's much faster than sorting everything into 
different folders.  I was afraid such a huge database would be 
unwieldy but LR's search engine is phenomenal.
