Adam,

It allows the use of the digital only lenses from the 1.5X crop  
cameras. The camera actually senses these lenses and automatically  
goes into crop mode. It is Nikon's way of not obsoleting expensive or  
even inexpensive lenses. It is kind of like Nikon's not obsoleting  
their older manual focus lenses on their current higher end cameras.  
It has certainly kept me as a Nikon user.
