As I look at my 'home defense force' of aged attack Basset Hounds in
slumber, with 'pre-ban' high-capacity drool magazines, my biggest fear
is bribery. They were useless during the spate of door-to-door vote
grubbing by local politicians. Professional courtesy amongst beggars
and thieves. Toss snacks or meaty bones on the floor, and 'providing
for the common defense' would take on all the unity of the French
Socialist party. (FWIW, I caught myself finding Martine Aubry quite
pretty. Ever try Mapquesting your way to Lille from this side of the
pond?)

Several years ago, when my son had a 15 year old girlfriend, it was
time for Appendix A of the 'Birds and Bees':
"Even Trancendentally meditating Unitarian Pacifist fathers with teen
daughters all have one thing in common, Kiddo: shotguns."

In the United States, we haven't found a way to require a competency
test to the First or Second Amendments. Jabba the Hutt isn't barred
from 'all-you-can-eat' buffets. Our mothers never put much stock in
the Fourth, or Fifth Amendments when we were growing up. And close to
home for the denizens of this LUG, one can even call themselves
'photographers', even if they never stray from the anti-theft tethers
at WalMart or Staples.

My 80 year old Father is still a university competitive rifle coach
('precision paper punching equipment'). You think we like our
Leicas? Get an earful of a Walther vs. Hammerli (very expensive match
rifles and pistols) discussion.

Charlie

P.S.: When someone at the bar tonight shows a Concealed Carry Permit
for ID, there comes my swift, curt reminder that the Second Amendment
stops at the front door. Firearms and firewater don't mix.
