When Leica first came out with their adapter rings they advised
customers to send they screw mount lenses in for correct adjustment
to the rings. They then would stamp the lens serial number on the
adapter to show it was a matched set. After awhile they stopped the
practice as they found that precise matching was not necessary. They
were also stamped with a 5 digit code which does not correspond to
the adapter catalog number. I can't verify this info in print
anywhere else though.

I got this info from the Leica Camera Forum in a post from a couple
of years ago. If you have James Lager's Book Vol III you may find
more info. (I don't).
