Use whatever you can get hold of cheaply. Hewes reels are excellent -  
much better that the Paterson ones. However, I've used paterson ones  
for years without problems. I just have lots of reels (10 plus) so  
that I can do a batch process and not worry about whether the reels  
are dry or not. I bought a whole load at only 1GBP per reel new two  
years ago!

Most of my darkroom kit is secondhand - bought off *bay and from small  
ads. I even found my Focomat IIc on *bay complete in excellent order a  
year ago.
