Isn't that what Nikon did with the F4?  It was one of the few AF  
cameras that could use the older AI-S lenses with the new matrix meter  
because, as I understand it, it had mechanical coupling for the older  
lenses in addition to the electronic contacts for the newer  lenses.   
I could be wrong.  Of course, I believe the mechanical coupling was  
ultimately dropped because of cost in later models.
