Edward I had expected this one to have a standard filter thread also. The ZM
f/4 18 takes 58mm accessories. However the Leica hood is an extremely
compact and much more effective shape than that for the ZM lens (which I
have currently). Maybe there is a concern regarding fitting filters inside
that compact hood? Or vignetting possibility? The Leica UV/IRs are not slim
line designs. Actually they don't have a normal 58 in that range either. I
had to buy the BW brand. No filter included (as with every other lens) but
the metal lens hood is. The metal hoods are not cheap separately, if you
look at the ones for the Summarits. You need to buy a new cap for those too.
This new design though is very clever , with a positive stop to make it
index perfectly when screwed on. Very secure and strong too. Its the same
idea on my Elmar M 24. A large improvement on the older plastic hoods, in my
opinion.
Note too that you really need to leave the hood mounted, with or without a
filter, as the front element is extremely exposed to passing light and sand
storms. Purtting the lens face down on the table with neither may bring
tears to the eyes. The WATE is the same.
I wonder if we'll see a custom adaptor from John Milich like the one for the
Wide Tri-Elmar for this lens?
The finders are horrendous prices. The Leica ones acually make the excellent
and expensive Zeiss finders look cheap! I ended up just updating to the
Voigtlander 25 finder to use with my 18.
