Frank - this is a little like asking,
"what would I see if I looked through a keyhole in your house?"

ya sort of got to be there.

If you're not
photographing with a digital camera
doing digital scans of negatives or transparencies
and printing digitally
you'll continue to have a hard time
understanding all this as unexperienced theory.

the metaphors
between analog masking techniques
and digital sharpening or un-sharp masking techniques
only make sense if you've experienced both.
