i agree with all of the proceeding.  i think that the discreet
mode is still advantageous, but in a more subtle way than just db.  

i suspect that people become attuned to the click and motor advance 
because they form a recognizable and repeated pattern.  when the 
sounds are randomly separated, the  noise of the 2 actions is not 
so noticable.  

my  wife and my sister are both notoriously (and in the latter case 
violently) hostile to photography and i haven't been threatened nearly 
so much since using discreet mode.
