When did they start using Ritalin for ADHD?

I don't seem to recall that Tommy being around after that. Nothing was made
of the matter, at least where us kids would hear of it, but I think Tommy
got yanked.

I taught in a private school once where we had a number of kids who were
ADHD but unmedicated. The kids wouldn't have been allowed to continue in the
public school system without medication, and their parents were affluent
enough to send them to the private school and keep the kids off script.

None of the staff was trained for this, and the school's supposed emphasis
was on top-quality academics. However, the market base in that town was so
small that to maintain enrollment we had to keep these kids (usually all the
sibs came too, as part of the package of taking the ADHD ones). It made for
a tough learning situation, and it was definitely true that just a small
number of kids caused an adverse condition that affected whole
grade-classes.

I had one kid who, as soon as I wasn't looking, would start breaking things
- I mean pick up a hammer and pound pound pound. This was in an art class.
An incredibly smart and articulate guy, but so much energy that reason
couldn't get past his restless need for violent motion.

I wonder if gags and jump ropes worked better than Ritalin?
