Scanners have no effect on HDD.... or at least that is my info.....

The simple answer about Hard Disc Drives is that they do not like being
dropped. Even if powered off.
If the HDD is also in your luggage, you stand the chance of theft.

So how safe is your approach as a backup? Not too bad, as long as the
luggage guys and TSA does not need a new HDD, and you, the airlines,
porters in hotels, etc. do not drop your luggage.......

This all goes away with memory cards......

I think Mark has a good idea.. bet a bunch of memory cards, and use them as
backup..... dupe them using your computer into another memory card.....

Travel volume of memory cards is really pretty miniscule......

I also save the card
contents on a very small 160 GB portable disc drive which I keep separately
in my luggage. This belt and suspenders approach has worked well in Europe
and North America, even on trips with many airplane changes. This coming
year I will be traveling to several countries in the Indian subcontinent, SE
Asia, and South America to gather material for a book. What is the
possibility that the disc files, both in the laptop and the backup drive
will be corrupted by passing through badly adjusted x-ray scanners?
