Richard,

I very much like the idea, but I don't think the colour is really the 
problem - IMO, the calligraphy appears simply too big for this photo, 
though it probably would not appear so in a portrait format shot.

I just took a look at it converted with the sepia conversion preset in 
Lightroom 2.6 - although the calligraphic element turns white, it 
remains readable and is a little less "obtrusive" - perhaps an idea?
