Light eyes are not light blue eyes. And pleasantly rosy cheeks can look like a 5:00 shadow if accentuated in B&W using, say, a blue filter. My eyes instinctively go to eyes and mouth when I'm looking at many faces, and then other features like skin. In Lluis' recent picture of the old fellow bumming a cigarette, I saw enough of both men's features in B&W and nothing seemed to be wanting due to lack of color. Perhaps the photography of women's faces is where color is a bigger concern. I've tried a lot of color -> black & white manipulation in PS using plugins. They work wonderfully in non-human pics, but either blanche someone to a pallor or gruff them up to the point that they look like Jack Palance. BIg pupils are a plus. I would probably blacken in people's pupils to make them more giant, but after that guy removed a tennis shoe and got panned for it, I'm not so sure.
