Which is why in more and more restaurants the waiter comes to your table
with a portable machine and the whole transaction is done right then and
there. In countries that require PIN for credit card transactions (e.g.
Denmark) it is even more necessary since to bring the machine to you rather
than take your card away to a back room.

Since I travel a lot, my normal usage pattern is all over the place, but I
am just being careful, especially online, and I check my cards frequently. I
have always found that AMEX has given me the best service when something was
wrong, whether an erroneous charge (such as a double-charge in a London
hotel recently), a lost card, whatever.
