Actually consider two tricks:
1) knowing when and when not to use flash
2) knowing how and how not to use flash

2a) placing one or more radio controlled flash(s)
where you find the main lights
(even say within a lampshade)
preserves the original "natural" lighting
while giving you the speeds and apertures
you may prefer.

On camera flash virtually always destroys
any sense of natural light
(unless used as appropriate fill)
