I think some of the finest achievements in film images were done in the thirties with the Speed Panchro lenses by the likes of Hal Mohr and Joseph L. Walker. There is great bokeh in films like A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) and The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933).
