Of course, once you get electricity, and a pump on your well, you might then
relegate the structure to the storage of rakes and shovels and such.

BTW, a few years ago, when they were building Armstrong Park, adjacent to
the French Quarter in New Orleans, a major anthropological project was the
digging up of former privy sites.  It seems that folks not only dump human
wastes down the hole, they drop broken dishes, old knives, all sorts of
stuff.

I just ran across this amusing link about Pennsylvania outhouse digging,
while trying to find some info on the digs I remember:
