Yes, there is a trick.  There is a square hole in the tripod bushing.  
This is the "socket" for a nut, which is holding on the bottom plate.  
You need to insert a suitable tool, and turn it LEFT handed direction.

I suspect you need to see what's going on with the release button; it 
isn't activating the release, to allow the film sprocket wheel to go 
backwards.
