Thanks Jim.  I blow hot and cold on the ring flash.  In fact before I 
started using it again for this shot I was considering selling it.  I 
have now changed my mind.  As I said in my previous post, it can cause 
problems with reflections shaped like white parentheses on some surfaces 
which spoil the pictures.
I have also found that it can be tricky balancing the foreground and 
background exposure.  I find that having the camera in manual exposure 
mode seems to work best, setting the camera to around the correct 
setting for the prevailing conditions and then letting the TTL flash 
metering sort out the flash exposure.  More experimentation is called 
for as well as remembering to take notes!
