I use a Drobo, but don't depend on it as infallible. It works really well;
4x1TB
drives; about 3.5TB of storage. I have all my photo files from 2009 and
prior on
it. I have the DroboShare device that allows you to hook it up to your
network
router/hub and access it wirelessly from my laptop. This is slower than
direct
connect via eSATA or Firewire, but fits my needs.

It has it's quirks. A couple of times it has frozen, but if you follow the
procedures to restart, you shouldn't have any problems. The times it did
this
were when we lost power to the house. No files were lost in the process...

I have the data on the Drobo backed up a couple of times and stored offsite.
Highly recommended of course... As I'm sure you know, you will not be able
to
take the drives out of the Drobo bay and simply read them.

Good luck and backup your backups!

Hi Everyone,

I'm in need of a new NAS box. Looking at NAS boxes on the market the Drobo
looks very interesting. Have any list members used the Drobo? If so, please
comment, pro or con.

Suggestions for other NAS boxes are welcome too. Ease of use, data security
and
easy back ups are the main criteria. Price (within reason), appearance,
noise
levels, OS, etc are not so important. I am not averse to a DIY solution.

Thanks in advance.

Akhil
