Leo/Ken/Herbert,
Thanks for the suggestions.

In answer to the specifics - The low light performance of these
cameras is so good that I just leave the Nikon D7000 on Auto ISO 3200
and the D700 on Auto ISO 6400, and adjust the minimum shutter speed
depending on the subject. I then use the camera on Aperture Priority
and let the ISO fall where it may. These photographs were taken pretty
late in the evening, when the light was not great - I had dialled in a
minimum shutter speed of 1/400, and an aperture of f8 for some depth
of field, so by the end the ISO hit 3200 at 1/200, i.e. a loss of a
further stop - the light was not good enough for a shutter speed of
1/400 at f8 at ISO3200.

The reason I was uncertain about doing all adjustments in LR 3.5 is
that I use a lot of localised adjustments in Photoshop using layers,
but was unable to do the same in Lightroom. The end result was that
using only global adjustments was a bit unnerving. For example, the
method I use to remove colour casts in Photoshop, using a black, white
and gray points on a curves layer is just not possible in Lightroom -
I could read the precise gray point of 128 using an eyedropper in
Photoshop. I will go back to doing adjustments in Photoshop once my
main computer is up and running, and redo and repost these images.
Again, I dodge, burn and sharpen precise small areas using masks,
which again is not possible. Getting the Nik add ons, which I use as
well, up and running for Lightroom may be a solution, though.

Cheers
Jayanand
