Well, first my many-year-old USB hub must have had oxidized contacts,
because the slightest disturbance, like cat walking near it, caused
fast disconnects/reconnects to hard disk that has DNGs. Disk failed
totally. No problem; did a backup since last negs put on it. Ran to
Fry's to buy new hub. Almost immediately after installing hub,
computer refused to boot. This was Dec. 31.

Called Apple Store, found to my surprise that they would be open Jan.
1. Took it in and after brief diagnosis, was told that my hard disk
had gone south: $220 please and we'll call you when it's ready.

Later that Jan. 1 afternoon, my wife announced that she'd lost the
internet. Phoned the ISP tech service and after a few directed
experiments, was told that my DSL modem had quit. $50 please plus $18
for USP ground shipping and you'll probably get it on Wednesday.

Now trying to catch up with the world.
