Now I understand........

The catalog can be put on the USB Drive ( or any other drive).  When LR
opens, it looks at the last place it put the catalog.  If not there, it
offers to look someplace else.

So , yes, it works fine, and all of your computers can use the same catalog
if placed on the drive.  The name of the catalog file does not change,
unless you do something. 

Thinking back it may take you to direct LR to put that first catalog and
backup on the USB drive..... but that should be fairly trivial.

Does that take care of the question?

NOTE:  Multiple catalog names and multiple drives may have a totally
different answer, I am only familiar with one catalog and one drive for all
my images.

Thanks, Frank. Sorry for the confusion - the only question is, more or less,
have you guys run into catalog management glitches running a catalog on an
external HD and using it on multiple machines?
