Also having a reserved character (+ sign) in a URL may be causing an issue:

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Howard+Cummer/HKFall2011/CommPartW.jpg.html 
the error starts at the + sign and ends at the following period

http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Howard??????????.jpg.html

Not sure why I would see the correct URL in that case....

Yep for me too. I suspect it may be to do with installed language packs or
something.
John's version of the link works for me.
