The second one definitely has merit.

I have a DOF calculator on my PDA. The depth markings on the 35mm 
lens are ok, but not all the readable on the 90mm, so having a 
calculator in my pocket is useful.

Previous blurred shots taken close up with the 90--you have commented 
on them, convinced me that I should pay more attention to DOF.
