Further, as I understand it, you have an option with LR4 to convert all your
images at one time to the new engine, or install it, and do no conversion in
batch mode, but one file at a time.

If you do not use the batch mode, the engine used with your old LR3 images
will be LR3.... only those you elect to convert MAY give problems..... 

So there is seems to be little risk in installing LR4, unless you do
something (stupid) yourself.....

OTOH, I am perpetually being beaten up for stating that you should never be
the first guy to use a new FW, SW version or application... let some one
else use it first.....

As normally happens, LR4 is installed along side the earlier version, it
doesn't replace it. I don't use custom tone curves (butno doubt others
do) . LR3 and its catalog  is still available to me on my computers.
