Hi Richard,
I know you say you "most likely not us a tripod", but I wonder whether 
not taking it may constrain you?  The reason I say this is that if your 
lenses aren't wide enough, you could always stitch a number of images 
together (you also have a rather nice pano gizmo  IIRC).
This would obviate the need to buy any more gear and most likely give 
you maximum flexibility.

I guess in the end it depends on the mode of travel and how much gear 
you can safely carry.
