Good suggestion... I tried a few today and maybe I found one that will work.
I can deal with the anomalies of non- consecutive original filenames by
using the original files and maybe individual folders per card. Then
combine folders. Then do the LR4 import.

It is work, but achieveable.

So is current name L1000001.dng and upwards (i.e. starts at 1)? If so, copy
all files to a new folder a use a third party file batch renaming
programme.... Something like "replace L10*****.dng with L11*****.dng" and
that should keep the frame numbers.....
