Really? The f3.5-5.6 VR was what I had and didn't change from 2003-2010. The
current f4.0 also has variable quality from what I have read........

Every year that lens was re designed. Its real hard to know you're shooting
with the same 24 to 120. Right now the version out is supposed to be quite
good and I'd love to be shooting with it. Its just a tad big and heavy.
