I have LR4, CS6 Master (some) and Capture 1 on my 2011 Air (i7/256GB/4GB)
with no issues (other than screen size!) I would not regard it as
replacement for a bigger laptop or desktop though....

Interesting what you say Bob because I was toying with upgrading my very old
plastic macBook. By the sound of it LR4 and PhotoMechanic would have no
trouble at all.
