Hi Jim,
Well let's say you don't cover the Olympics with just a 50mm lens on any 
camera. Since 1972 Munich murders  the security has been tougher every year 
and photographers are positioned farther away from the athletes in most 
cases.

A 300mm is considered about as short a lens as you can use. The regular lens 
begins at 400mm and longer, also with extenders.

If you use a 300mm lens, you better have a couple of extenders to reach 
farther or you'll be doing major blow-ups to get anything..
