In my opinion the worst way to convert to b&w is to desaturate across the 
board. In LR if you click the b&w button on the basic adjustment tab you can 
then go to the HSL tab and increase the red slider to help with the too dark 
faces if necessary. Go to b&w mix, take the small button top left of the 
panel and place on the face, and then move it up or down with your finger 
hlding down the left mouse button.
