On import the options are Copy as DNG, Copy, Move or Add If you are using Add you are adding the file to your catalog* in its current location which is still on the memory card and not copying it to your computer at all.* * *The catalog records where the file is or where you have copied it to and stories edit info within the catalog itself. While you can add files to your catalog that reside on an external drive (but not a network location) that is not what you intended I think. The option you want is *Don't Import Suspected Duplicates *which is a* * radio button on the RHS panel (file handling box). If you have collapsed that box you may not have seen it. Where you have elected to add files to your catalog without that option *Or File Renaming* LR will add it again to the catalog but add a 1 or two to the file name to avoid a conflict with duplicates in same location. On import LR will initially read the embedded previews (which are low quality in DNGs especially) before it can do that sort for you. Then in the background it will render new previews (quality dependant on your preference selection) from every file after it is imported. Times are also affected by number of files naturally as well as computing resources available.
