Dear, dear Ted,

No need to apologize after a life time of photography covering 60+ years;
and the entire world of experience.

HCB himself chose to set the camera down and picked up a pencil and drawing
pad.
I've known more than a few professional photographers who simply stopped
making photographs;
when the commissions, hires and/or contracts, ceased.

Purpose? A potentially very large concept to consider and discuss.
Also seems quite an illusive critter - comes and goes - without notice;
does not necessarily come when called;
does not seem to know (or respect) the "stay" command.

For three months, after the heart attack, my "purpose" shifted to "food" and
"exercise."
Nothing else seemed to have any meaning whatsoever.
The number of my unfinished "projects" has become quite absurd;
(without even looking at the "new projects" list).
And for each of those "projects" I can easily ask, "what for? who cares?"

Yet - I still find pleasure in the various processes of photography.
And I'm fortunate enough to have a few clients still asking for "my work;"
just enough to keep me wanting to keep my chops and equipment "up."

I also feel gratitude to you and all the others on this list
who continue to "look," ask questions, challenge, teach, show, etc.

At this point I consider photography just another form of communicating.
Words and images. Coming in and going out.

You've lost a major part of your life Ted.
You're experiencing life in totally different modalities today than one year
ago.
Allow yourself to process these changes.
"Photographic Purpose" may or may not return.
Stay tuned in with us to whatever channels you find worthwhile;
we'll certainly stay tuned in to your words of wisdom and experience;
as well as your photography;
whether historical or current.

And - yes!
as interesting, tempting, and unaffordable as all the NEW GEAR may appear;
My old and battered stuff continues to make beautiful "pictures."

Fond regards,
George
