If you are lighting the object using flash or bulb, then 35mm is "better"
than 70mm, etc

Light falls off with the square of the distance. Using a 35mm lens, you are
twice as close as using a 70. That is 4 times the light, or 2 Fstops of
more DOF.

I'm trying to find reasons to keep my 35-70 f4 Leica R zoom.

Is macro at 35mm focal length sensible?
