Not quite a cult, Jim ;-). Just suggested simplest baseline to avoid
possible errors/complications with some scenarios.
There are skeins of threads in the dedicated forums asking for help with
file transfers/formatting/usb connection to camera etc  ;-)

In M digital cameras at least, formatting a card in-camera that has been
used previously in another camera preserves/restores the folder structure
and file numbering sequence. Custom file naming/numbering can be affected
for example and the creation of second parent folder can mean that new
files appear to be absent when in fact they are just not in the expected
default location.

One specialised scenario is the uploading of new firmware via card too



Ask me how I know that delete in camera really means delete and defies the
Sandisk provided recovery tools too ;-)

Worth noting that Leica Camera has deleted the in-built port from the soon
to arrive M.
