For those who want to understand the severity of the drought in the western 
US you only have to look at this site:

A measurable fraction of the world's food is produced in those sections that 
are red and dark red. Water is coming from paleolithic aquifers that are 
like oil wells: they aren't going to be refilled any time soon.
