The loss of detail away from the center has been shown to exist on the A7R 
with rangefinder lenses as long as 50mm, and gets worse as the focal length 
is shortened with symmetrical or near symmetrical lenses. It definitely is a 
problem and is much worse than the mtf diagrams would suggest.

Yes, the flat field plug-in works, but just as with cornerfix an increase in 
noise is unavoidable as the exposure levels in the corners are increased to 
compensate for the severe corner light fall off. The color shift is fixable 
without too many penalties, but similarly the distortion of other lenses is 
fixable with few penalties, and that often is more easily dealt with in post 
processing.

I'm a fan of symmetrical wide angle lenses, and as you say, in the film era 
the f4/5 Biogon would have been the star, except for speed. Now it's not as 
compelling.
