They were unsuccessful. The current MICRO 4/3's cameras are successful because they are competing against point and shoots with sensors many times smaller but with bodies about the same size. The 4/3's system standard lasted from 2003 to 2008 when the micro 4/3's format replaced it. Five years. The reason being even the dumb public being sold on megapixel count knew a rip off when they peeked behind the lens of their 4/3's camera which was bigger than a Nikon D100 or a Canon EOS D60 and say a was teeny looking sensor like a point and shoot sensor in a DSLR which explained why they needed to shoot at iso 400 instead of iso 4000. http://www.dvhardware.net/article28900.html I'm not against small format cameras I'm against small format film or sensors in non small format bodies. And I'm against the just plain odd notion that a small format camera produces and image as well as a bigger format camera does or that the difference is minor. Glass is minor. Format is major. No optical wizardry is going to make up for a crazy small format size. Its the first thing you think of in camera buying and using not the last.
