Interestingly enough, with reference to Aram's recent ballon photos, this 
was the site of the first flight from Irish soil back in 1785. Inspired by 
the Montgolfier brothers in France, Richard Crosbie made his own balloon and 
took off from here before landing a few miles away to the north east in 
Clontarf. The prevailing south westerly winds and Dublin's proximity to the 
sea would have ensured a watery landing if he had gone much further. 
Surprisingly, it was eight years before the first manned flight on US soil 
by Blanchard in Philadelphia.
