Gerry,
Are your video drivers up to date?

Richard's suggestion is a sound one - in a computer system, the weak
link with external devices tends to be the cable - mainly because they
are cheaply made pieces of fluff! 95% of problems with external
devices can be sorted out by changing the cable.
