Hi Leo,
My only response to your not getting closer is?  :-) BUY A LONGER LENSE!

That's why I would have at the Calgary Stampede at least a Leica 280 2.8 on 
the R8 SLR hanging on my right shoulder with a motor drive R camera. And on 
the left a couple of other R motor driven cameras with various length lenses 
for varying reach.
The R cameras were  nearly always the "ACTION CAMERAS TO COVER ANY 
ACTION/SPORTS  SUBJECTS!" Oh yeah in my photo vest I'd also have the 1:4X 
and 2:0X extenders if longer were required.
