I've always use a loop of rope attached to the left ring of my camera bags
that I can put over my other shoulder so my regular bag can be put on my
back, thus the
best of both types.

I always liked Domke bags when I used smaller gear.  When I had to start
using Canon 1D's I found the best bag for me was made by Tough
Traveler (!) a very obscure brand.

Now that I'm retired, and don't have to carry those clunkers, this is my
daily bag (including a rope loop):
