We had our annual assessment tasting for my wine club today, in which we
try to see what is heading towards decline, and here are some of the
empties. Our club is only interested in Bordeaux wine.

In addition to these reds that we have stocks of, we also had a tasting
of nine differing dry whites with a view to purchase, and two very
pleasant sweet Sauternes that we also hold. The highlight was the blind
tasting which revealed that none of us have the nous of the Chinese
market. The "blind" wine was a decanted bottle of '98 Lafite Rothschild
which, while nice and very acceptable, all of us found ordinary enough,
and certainly not worth the ?800 a bottle some people will pay for it.
We had bought a couple of cases in 2001 before the inexplicable Lafite
price frenzy in 2010/11 in China, and sold them during the madness to
buy other comparable, but cheaper, wines. It seems we made a good
decision at the time.

The highlight for me was a luscious '03 Rieussec ( one of the Sauternes)
which quite blew me away. Along with a few others, it's not in the photo.
