Your shots of Iona that started the discussion are lovely, as I first mentioned. Yes too, great pictures can come from lots of lens types, no argument. But you can't get away with "magic" or lack there-of to justify your opinion of the 50 asph. What kind of magic? Sabrina the teenage witch magic? Gorgeous Aussie Nicole Kidman (good riddance to Tom, Katie can have him) Bewitched magic? Very well corrected causing personally unpleasing bo-ke magic, lower contrast, softer in the field due to residual aberration magic? I know that you may not want to be a gearhead on this. That's fine, but show some pictures and say, I like this rendering because..., or I don't like this as much because it has ........, For this romantic portrait/gritty reportage/dramatic fine art warthog close up, I think that .... lens is the ideal because..... etc Cheers Hoppy -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [Leica] IMG Iona and grandpa Fitzgerald work... There you go, Hoppy has thrown down the > gauntlet. but don't forget Hops that the issue is the image, its content and its look...does it have magic? not which fifty did you take it with? :-) when it comes to truly GREAT images one rarely hears about what lens was used... at least that's my simple minded take on it... :-) maybe we should ask each participant (God, do we even have any? Does anyone care?) what their favorite fifty is...? and then ask for 5-10 bw photos they have taken with it, to try to judge consistent differences... geeze, is it really me saying this? I know that when Jeffrey goes out shooting he likely takes one fifty... how he determines which one is beyond me... but chances are that the one he wants/needs for a particular shot, is one of the 49 that he left at home... :-) :-) Steve > Hey I think I am channelling Erwin Puts here!
