I _usually_ do, but this time I didn't. My version of Photoshop (PS 8) can't edit DNG files, but it can edit NEF-files so I wanted to leave the door open this time. Bad move. LightRoom seems to really require DNG. Now ... it didn't matter all that much. The problem was on my laptop, where I just off-load files and work with them while I'm travelling. I never have anything permanent on my laptop. So after re-installing with the "repair" option, uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch, rebooting and all the other tricks ... I just trashed my archive and re-imported, this time letting Lightroom convert NEF to DNG, and everything went ok. Trashing my archive wasn't as drastic as it sounds. I had all of the files somewhere else and the laptop is not a production machine, so I didn't loose anything. I don't like LIghtroom because you 1) sharpen first and then 2) resize ... DUH ... Doesn't Adobe care about quality? Otherwise it works well. I've never had a problem with my desktop, but then again, I've always let Lightroom convert to DNG. If I ever have to trash that archive, I'll dump Lightroom as fast as I can. Thanks for your suggestion. I might check the forums later.
