Did you look beyond the first definition? Perfectly acceptable is the use of
philistine as an uncultured person, one whose interests are material and
commonplace. That's with a lower case "p", but, of course, when it begins
the sentence, it is capitalized. The original poster was quite correct in
its use. Let's use the dictionary correctly and worry less about offending.
When I mean to offend, you won't have to be "politically correct" to know it!
